We are pleased to announce the glaciological Conference “Ice and Climate Change: A View from the South” (VICC 2010) to be held in Valdivia, Chile, 1-3 February 2010. The objective of the Conference is to present new results and discuss ongoing cryospheric and climate changes in the Southern Hemisphere and their impacts and consequences on society and the environment. Although the main focus will be glaciology and climatology, we hope to foster interdisciplinary discourse about climate change through the contribution of other
disciplines in earth sciences and social sciences.
The Conference has scientific sponsorship from the International Association of Cryospheric Sciences (IACS) and the Climate and Cryosphere (CliC) Project of WCRP-SCAR. As a complement to the science, we will be organising a social programme to allow attendees to enjoy the beautiful summer landscape around Valdivia.
The scientific topics to be addressed are:
1. Ongoing cryospheric changes and related impacts in the Southern Hemisphere, including glaciers, ice sheets, ice shelves, permafrost, sea ice, and freshwater ice
2. Climate of the Southern Hemisphere: variability vs. trends
3. Remote sensing and geophysical techniques for cryospheric studies
4. Modeling of cryospheric processes and data assimilation
5. Similarities and contrasts with cryospheric and climate changes in the Northern Hemisphere
6. Detection and attribution of cryospheric processes
7. Societal impacts, risk management, economic impacts, adaptation, mitigation, management policies
At the website listed below you can find more detailed information about the Conference, including instructions for abstract submission.
